DJ’s Spotlight: Richard Grey

This Beatrising Spotlight on Richard Grey reveals just how awesome his career has been so far.
Originally from France, Richard played a massive part in developing the “French Touch” style in the latter half of the 1990s. He has a dizzying array of productions and collaborations with some of the biggest labels around, including Spinnin’, Subliminal, G-High, Ultra Bass, Pacha, Pornostar, House Session Germany and Total Freedom Recordings.
He has worked with some of the most talented names in the industry such as Shakira, Erick Morillo, Armand Van Helden, Junior Jack, Harry Romero, Jose Nunez, Antoine Clamaran, Robbie Rivera, and Yves Larock to name a few.
The calling of the clubbing capital of America took Richard to fabulous Las Vegas where he wrecked dance floors on the countries’ mainstage! Richard now calls sunny South Africa home, where the beauty of Cape Town continues to inspire him to create even more magic.

Cool to be here, thanks! How did you first get into music?
Well, house music got to me like a meteorite strike. The 1st time I heard that 4/4 club rhythm I was like “Oh my god, what is that sound”.
This was back in 1993 and it was never heard before on the radio or anywhere else and I became obsessed with finding more of this music
.

Where did inspiration come from for you?
My inspiration came from creating something new to dance to and the challenge of producing it with what was available at that time, we were pioneering the sound with no boundaries.

What’s your take on Spotify and the new world of playlists? What’s good about it or not?
Technologie evolve and give more access to the masses to listen to music, but in term of club records Spotify is not where it is intended to be listen too, nightclubs are.

What’s it like collaborating with Total Freedom Recordings?
I love to be able to produce a 100% DJ oriented record with a label that is behind you to support it without the pressure to go on a comercial radio level.

How has 2018 been treating you so far? Any more productions in the making? How about as far as DJ-ing goes?
2018 has been great so far and I’m looking to focus more on the European market for my dj tour.

Is there anything coming up that’s really got you excited?
A lots of DJ oriented productions. Back to the basic.

We’ll definatley keep our ears pricked for whatever you come up with next!
