One would think that streaming has made piracy a thing of the past, but not as far as IFPI is concerned. The global recording industry organization states that piracy has not fully died out, but that it has instead mutated into another form of it. Rampant illegal downloads translated into piracy just a few years ago, whereas nowadays it’s called stream ripping (illegally saving music while streaming it).
The younger bracket surveyed between ages 16 to 24 opted for illegally saving music on their devices while listening to streaming, that’s 49%. Almost 55% in this group copped to getting a hold of music in the past six months in ways that “infringed copyrights”. Numbers in stream ripping fell just under 40% for the 25 to 34 age range, although more than 45% of them did leak that they also acquired music illegally in the past six months.
