Music Industry: IFPI releases Music Listening 2019

Increase in music listening time as per IFPI Music Listening 2019 Report

The IFPI Music Listening 2019 Report provides listeners about how they contribute to the recorded music industry.

As per the IFPI Survey, the weekly time indulged in listening to music by common people has increased from 17.8 hours per week to 18 hours per week, which is around 1.12% more in 2019 than the last year. This can also be measured as 52 3-minutes’ songs being played daily.

Increase in popularity

IFPI Music Listening 2019 Report mentions an average of 54% of users have increased who has been spotted to be a ‘fanatical’ fan of or going ‘crazy’ about a specific genre of music. This rise in popularity tends to be around 63% for the age group of 16 to 24 years.

IFPI Music Listening 2019 Report mentions an increase in usage of audio streaming services

There has been a trend in the older age groups to engage in online music streaming services by 7% more in 2019 than in 2018. But the highest growth has been found amongst the age group of 35 to 64 years as 54% of this group access the music streaming services, increasing by 8% than in 2018. This increase is considered to be the biggest turnaround for 2019 and is projected to increase more down the next 3 to 5 years.

Copyright issue

Since copyright infringement has been a persistent issue in the music industry, IFPI has recorded that 27% of all those who were surveyed are using unlicensed methods to access these services. While 23% are using pirated music sources.

Frances Moore, Chief Executive of IFPI, said that the report includes the rate of increase in music streaming services accessed by people of different age groups. He also mentioned that music companies are working tirelessly with their artists in order to produce better music for listeners. Moreover, he said that the report mentions the illegal ways of accessing music globally and how it can hamper its growth.
