Suggestions on how to strategically promote your music for free

Independent music artists never seem to have a problem tapping into their creativity with endless passion and commitment when it comes to their music projects. The same thing, sadly, cannot be said about marketing budgets, which are virtually nonexistent, making music promotion an uphill battle. And a lack of proper promotion can mean only one thing: no profit.
There are, however, several free, key methods which artists who are trying to break into the music business can and must make use of for effectively promoting their music. Here’s a list of some of these methods for starters.

1. Be socially active on social media
Anyone can create an account on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Istagram or Tumbler, right? That’s the easy part. Being really present, active and even interactive on social media is a little bit trickier. Being active though is an essential move for the success of any creative professional. Take time in researching ways which best represent and reflect who you are in order to promote yourself on these various networks. Be prepared to offer up only the most insightful, important content, and stay away from blatant, overt self-promotion which repeats the same thing over and over. When promoting your music on social media try to keep the posts that are clearly self-promotional down to one per every seven posts: the so called “one in seven” rule.

2. Contact other creative individuals to forge trade promotions
Once your presence on social media has been solidly set in place try contacting other creative professionals – artists, photographers, indie authors, musicians – and offer to trade social media promotions, i.e., they promote your music in return for you promoting their work. The more the merrier!

3. Start using the “BandsInTown” App for Facebook
Gear up with the BandsInTown App so that anyone visiting your Facebook page will automatically see all your upcoming gigs; a fantastic, convenient way of “seamlessly” promoting your music on Facebook through the App’s hip and highly visible interface.

4. Go virtual! by hosting a “virtual show” on StageIt.com
You can now connect even more with your fans through StageIt, which allows musicians to hold concerts using video conferencing technology from anywhere at all! And it is free of charge for artists. Show off your live show with StageIt, anytime, anywhere.

5. Let images lend promotional power to your online music
A picture is worth a thousand words, so why only post promotional text links to your songs on social media when you can capture peoples’ attention with eye-catching images to boost audience engagement? Place creative, thematically appropriate images above song links you post on social media to really make them pop out even more. Don’t miss out on this valuable strategy for getting your band noticed!
