You fire up a prehistoric-themed slot expecting a bit of nostalgia from the original T-Rex, spin for ten minutes, and realise the base game is mostly treading water. Then the bonus round lands, the wilds start stacking, and the whole session flips. That is T Rex II in a nutshell, and it is worth understanding before you commit real money to it.
T Rex II is the RealTime Gaming (RTG) follow-up to one of the studio’s older hits. It keeps the same five-reel, dinosaur-era setting and layers on a free games feature plus a randomly triggered progressive jackpot. It is not the most technically ambitious slot on the market in 2026, and it is not pretending to be. But there is a specific structure to how it pays, and once you see it, you can decide honestly whether the game suits you.
What T Rex II Actually Is
At its core this is a five-reel video slot built around a fixed set of paylines, with a wild symbol, a scatter symbol, and a free spins round as the main events. RTG has historically kept its payline counts on the lower-to-mid side rather than pushing into the thousands of ways to win that rival studios favour. That means wins land less frequently than on a megaways-style game, but individual line hits can be more meaningful when they connect.
The dinosaur theme is carried by the usual cast: a T-Rex acting as the wild, egg scatters, and a mix of prehistoric creatures and card values filling out the reel strips. The artwork is functional rather than spectacular. If you are coming from the slick 3D animation of modern studios, this will feel dated. If you care more about how a slot behaves than how it looks, that will not bother you much.
How the Base Game Behaves
The base game is where most of your spins will happen, and it is the part of T Rex II that will test your patience. Standard line wins are the bread and butter here, and the wild symbol does meaningful work by substituting for regular symbols and, in most configurations of this game family, boosting the value of the combinations it completes.
A few things to keep in mind before you press spin:
- The wild is your friend in the base game, but it is the scatter that unlocks the feature. Chasing wilds alone is not a strategy.
- Streaky stretches are normal. Medium-volatility RTG titles can go cold for a long stretch and then pay several features close together.
- Payline structure means partial lines matter. Check the paytable in the game help screen so you know which symbols pay from two-of-a-kind rather than three.
This is not a slot that rewards rapid-fire bet escalation after a dead run. The outcome of each spin is independent, and the random number generator does not owe you a feature after 50 or 500 dry spins.
Why the Free Spins Round Carries the Game
Here is the specific takeaway worth holding onto: T Rex II is a feature-dependent slot, and the free games round is where the serious win potential is concentrated. Land the required number of scatter symbols in a single spin and you trigger a batch of free spins with enhanced reel behaviour — typically extra wild activity and, in versions of the mechanic, the ability to retrigger additional spins from within the round.
Why does this matter so much? Because the base game math is deliberately restrained. The studio has essentially moved a disproportionate share of the game’s return into the bonus. Practically, that means:
- Your overall session result is heavily influenced by whether and how often you trigger the feature.
- Triggering the feature once is not the same as profiting from it. Bonus rounds can and do pay very little.
- Longer sessions at a sensible stake give you more statistical chances to see the round than short, high-stakes bursts.
If you are the type of player who gets frustrated by 150 spins with nothing to show for it, this structure will grate. If you are comfortable budgeting a session around the occasional feature, it is a fair trade.
The Progressive Jackpot: Worth Knowing, Not Chasing
T Rex II sits within RTG’s network of random progressive jackpots. The key word is random. These jackpots can be awarded on any spin, regardless of bet size or symbols landed, which is appealing until you consider what that actually means for your odds.
A random progressive is not something you can influence. Betting more does not improve your chances in any way you can measure, and the jackpot contribution is a small slice taken from every wager across the network — which sits inside the game’s overall return rather than on top of it. Treat any jackpot win as a windfall, never as an expectation. Never increase your stake specifically to chase it.
RTP, Volatility and What the Numbers Mean for You
RTG titles do not always publish a single headline RTP in the way that many UK-facing studios do, and some RTG games ship with configurable return settings that a casino operator can select. That variability is a genuine caveat. Before you play for real money, open the in-game help or paytable and look for the published return figure for the version you are being offered. If it is not there, that absence is itself worth weighing up.
On volatility, T Rex II sits in the middle of the spectrum. It is not a punishing high-variance grinder where your balance evaporates between features, and it is not a low-variance drip feed either. The practical implication is bankroll sizing: a common rule of thumb is to have enough for at least 200 to 300 base bets if you want a realistic chance of seeing multiple features.
Playing T Rex II from the UK
This is the section where UK readers need to pay closest attention. RTG software is not as widely distributed among UK Gambling Commission-licensed operators as studios like NetEnt, Pragmatic Play or Games Global. That means the casinos offering T Rex II are more likely to operate under offshore jurisdictions.
Before depositing anywhere, check the operator against the UKGC register and confirm how the site handles UK players. Things worth verifying:
- Whether the operator holds a current UKGC licence, or only an offshore one
- Whether withdrawals are processed in GBP without punitive currency conversion
- When comparing the top casinos not on gamstop, it is important to consider whether bonus terms are transparent about wagering requirements and maximum bet limits.
- What responsible gambling tools are available — deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion
Playing on an unlicensed site removes the safety net of UK regulation, including access to alternative dispute resolution. If something goes wrong with a withdrawal, you will have far fewer routes to resolution. That is a real risk, and it is worth stating plainly rather than glossing over it.
Mobile Play and Practical Performance
T Rex II runs in-browser on modern mobile devices, and RTG’s later catalogue has been adapted for touch play. Spinning on a phone is straightforward, though the interface reflects an older design philosophy — buttons are functional rather than elegant, and the reel animations are modest. Performance is light, which is a small mercy if you are playing on an older handset or a patchy connection.
Bankroll Tips for This Specific Slot
A few grounded pointers drawn from how the game is structured:
- Set a session budget in cash terms and a time limit, then stick to both.
- Choose a stake that lets you play several hundred spins. Feature-dependent slots punish short sessions.
- Do not chase losses by raising your bet. The maths is indifferent to your previous spins.
- Walk away after a strong feature win if you hit your target. The game gives back as readily as it pays out.
And the honest caveat that applies to every slot: the house edge is built in. Over a long enough sample, the casino wins. Every spin carries a real possibility of loss, and no pattern of betting changes that.
Verdict
T Rex II is a serviceable, medium-volatility slot with a clear identity: restrained base game, feature-heavy free spins, and a random progressive that you should treat as a bonus rather than a plan. It will not dazzle anyone who values modern production, and the RTP transparency issues around RTG releases deserve your attention before you deposit.
The short version: know that the free spins round carries the maths, size your bankroll to survive the gaps between features, and only play at an operator you have actually verified holds the right licence for UK players. That combination is the difference between a fun session and an avoidable one.
