Major streaming players such as Spotify and Apple Music have started featuring playlists as a new form of “charts”, which has become an important place for fans and music supervisors to turn to for discovering new music, but not only.
Traditional radio stations also take advantage of playlists to gauge which songs are popular enough to add to their own programming.
Nowadays the main objective for record labels is to get their ‘hot off the press’ singles onto these playlists: “playlist promotion” as the industry has coined it.
What was once a “legal” strategy labels used to get songs added to radio (and still is), has now become obsolete being most labels have now switched over to this new vehicle.
